Wilford comes from a small village called Meremath. Its in the Province of Greyhelm between the city of Greyhelm and Redshore. Until 10 years ago Meremath was part of the expansive Duchy of Lythien (villagers will be very hesitant to reveal this information to strangers). At no time in living memory has the village been visited by any member of the ruling family. In fact, the only notice taken of it nowadays is the exceptional wine produced from its vineyards.
Ten years ago marked the overthrow of the Lythien family and the subsequent redistribution of their holdings. Meremath seemed to have been overlooked as the tax collector stopped calling and the Duke Aeron Grey’s soldiers ceased their patrols. The independent-minded villagers met and agreed that they were better off without the duke’s taxation and decided to try to make it on their own.
Laelana, an enterprising Merchant lass (Wilfords eldest sister), was able to find new markets for their wines. Achevan, a bold young cleric of Rellian, united their minds in common worship, and a gifted member of the former duke’s military, Richmar, lead the villagers in a series of skirmishes that drove off a local orc tribe. Things settled down and, after a few years of wondering, everyone seemed satisfied that their struggle was concluded. Meremath had achieved independence through hard work and obscurity.
Laelana, Father Achevan and Mayor Richmar make up the village council. While there is little love lost among the council (Laelana and Achevan actually hate each other), the three of them understand the importance of the each other’s role. For many years, they have maintained a balance of power. Lately, however, that balance has begun to shift.
Wilford's parents died in an Orc raid after the village's independence, which left Laelana, 22 at the time, to raise him and his other sister Raelle. You were 10 and Raelle was 12. Your family became the nobility of Meremath at this time.
It has been years since the village has faced a military threat. Many villagers have begun to resent the additional taxes and mandatory militia training imposed by Mayor Richmar. Both you and Laelana has detected this swing in the village’s attitude. Mayer Richmar and Achevan are up to something. They seem to be trying to gain more power over the village.
Laelana decided to send Wilford to Redshore, a larger coastal city to the south, to try to win favors with Lady Elundra Lorechester, cousin to Duchess Elsbeth Grey. At first Wilford was opposed to the idea, then he met Lady Elundra. It was love at first sight, but Wilford needed to win her over somehow.
Compared to the other villagers in Meremath, Wilford's family is very well off, but you are really not that wealthy. Its due to Laelana's excellent business since that keeps the village going. She hope that you and Lady Elundra will hit it off and Meremath will join with Redshore.
Wilford has no real desire to be a wine merchant like Laelana, he is a man of the sword. There are Dueling contests all over Corvel and he are very good. Wilford joined a dueling contest, in which one stop, is in Redshore. What better way to impress Lady Elundra?
The dueling circuit had just begun when the call came out for "all able bodied men and women" to go to Draman Del. It seems that war is breaking out there very soon, and King Marcus' men are busy with the Kilmoorians in Holaf. Running low on money, and having a since of duty to King and Country, Wiford headed to Draman Del, his courtship will have to wait.
Upon arriving at Draman Del, two guardsmen, Ledon & Vradan, put Wilford to work immediately. The had him join a band of men, comprised of other mercenaries, to check out a dwarven village north of Draman Del. It seems they are in league with the Zenith tribes of Akrindor and must be taken out.
Upon arriving at the dwarven village, Wilford noticed only a few people here, mostly old men, women and children. 3 warriors meet you and start talking gibberish. The leader of your mercenary group, shouts "Yep, there in league with em alright, attack!" You instantly know this is wrong and refuse to fight, but as you turned around to go back to Draman Del, one of the mercenaries clouts you in the head with a war hammer. You go staggering back, vision a blur, knocking one of the unkept huts down on top of you. It’s the last thing Wilford remembers…… until the PCs find him still uncounscious.
